What I Learned Working at TSA

July 2026 · Former TSA Officer

I know that for many travelers getting through the security process can be a hassle, stressful and full of uncertainty. Noise, long lines and fear of the unknown all contribute to that. While some of these may be unavoidable, there are some steps you can take to make it easier.

Of course, arriving early is always good advice. Early arrivals can avoid the stress of traffic delays and longer lines at the checkpoint.

There is much more you can do pre-flight: check the TSA website, call the airline or check online for latest information regarding your flight, make sure you have up-to-date IDs, dress simply for easier screening and consider getting the MyTSA app. With this app you can:

- Check what items you can and can't bring through security
- See which airports and airlines support TSA Precheck
- Ask for live assistance from TSA via social media

Know that your own attitude can help for a less stressful security check. Consider these hints:

- Smile, it is easy to do!
- Engage in some small talk — not much because everyone is busy, but some agents may welcome it as it contrasts with many other comments they receive on their shift
- Listen and follow the agents' instructions
- If selected for further screening, be polite. Ask any questions in a friendly, non-threatening manner.

If you do have further questions about your screening process or about security procedures at the checkpoint in general, you can always ask to speak to a supervisor. Again, civility and smiling go a long way here as well. Make sure you understand the supervisor's explanation completely. Feel free to ask follow-ups in the same polite manner.

So, information and your own attitude are key factors for getting through the screening process. Use these tips for a happier airport visit!
